Anglican Chinese Mission
Church Goals 2001
Goal One: Mission Structure
We will clarify the structure
of the Mission so that all members will have a clear understanding
of their place as servants of God, and members of the Mission
and the wider Anglican Church. Those whose roles will be clarified
include:
* Laity generally (an up-to-date parish role will be maintained
and we will seek to have an amendment made to the diocesan statute
with respect to membership);
* The Churchwardens and Vestry;
* Any Assistant Clergy;
* The Pastor;
* The Chinese Centre in relationship to the Pastor and Vestry;
* All lay leaders, groups, and committees operating at the Mission,
in relationship to the Pastor and Vestry.
Under the Diocesan Statute governing
the Mission, membership of the Chinese Anglican Mission is defined
as follows:
Section 5 Roll of Parishioners
Every person who is of Chinese race or descent and who resides
within the boundaries of the Pastorate [boundaries are those
of the Diocese of Wellington] is entitled to be enrolled as a
parishioner of the Pastorate if that person -
(a) has attained the age of 16 years; and
(b) has signed a declaration to the effect that he or she has
been baptized and is a member of the Church, or is known by the
Pastor and Churchwardens to be so qualified.
The phrase about seeking an amendment
of the diocesan statute with respect to membership is intended
to facilitate the sorting out of a situation where people of
Chinese descent married to people not of Chinese descent are
worshipping at the Mission. Under the diocesan statute as it
currently stands, the spouses who are not of Chinese descent
cannot be members of the Chinese Anglican Mission.
Goal Two: Leadership
We will provide:
* Ordained ministry by a priest or priests able to communicate
effectively in Cantonese and/or Mandarin and in English
* Support and care of the Clergy. This would include:
* Providing an environment conductive to him/her effectively
fulfilling the goals of the mission
* Allowing his/her ministry style to emerge in accordance with
the agreed goals
* Providing physical and spiritual support
* Lay Leadership by people able to communicate effectively in
Cantonese and/or Mandarin and/or English
Goal Three: Discipleship
and Lay Ministry
We will provide:
* Small groups in English, in Cantonese, and if possible in Mandarin,
suitable for people of differing ages and differing spiritual
maturity
* Structured Christian education for children, youth and all
Church members to promote on-going spiritual maturity
* Regular teaching on, and regular displays of, resources suitable
for daily Bible reading and prayer and spiritual growth by individual
members of the Mission
* Regular opportunities for people to discern their spiritual
gifts and to move into exercising these
* On-going opportunities for people to train for licensed lay
ministry and for other forms of ministry, or to access diocesan
training opportunities
Goal Four: Pastoral Care
and Healing
We will seek to reduce the level
of conflict/hurt among members of the Mission by:
* Providing a non-threatening and non-confrontational environment
for all to work together in appreciating each other as different
and respecting each other
* Providing culturally appropriate pastoral care for members
* Ensuring there is an open dialogue between Vestry and the congregation
and between the Priest and the congregation and Vestry
* Providing clear definitions of area of responsibility
* Regular preaching and teaching on the place of conflict, anger
and forgiveness within the Christian community
* Setting up procedures for dealing with conflict and gossip
* Offering appropriate training on conflict resolution
Goal Five: Mission in the
Chinese Community
We will seek to reach out to
other sections of the Chinese community by:
* Co-operating with the Victoria University of Wellington Anglican
Chaplaincy to attempt to obtain the services of a student worker
to work partly at the Mission, with the Mission providing accommodation
[already Vestry policy]
* Co-operating, combining and liaising with a greater number
of Chinese groups, churches, in particular our sister Chinese
Churches, and other community groups, seeing them as groups that
can help and/or supplement the activities of the Mission
* Providing a manageable social service to the needy of our community,
focusing on:
* ESOL, migrant, and student servicing
* Financial/budget assistance
* Transportation
* Meals
* Friendship and Fellowship
* Seeking to manage resources, facilities and leadership to support
Chinese cultural, sporting and recreational activities to facilitate
outreach to the Chinese community
Goal Six: Inreach-Outreach
We will seek to increase attendance
at our services by:
* Providing a welcome team to greet newcomers and provide on-going
liaison with them
* Providing services and groups suitable to those with little
or no previous Christian involvement
* Running Alpha courses in English, in Cantonese and, if possible,
in Mandarin regularly
* Integrating Alpha courses with baptism preparation, using the
catechumenal process or some other method
* Publicizing the Mission at tertiary institutions with high
Chinese student populations
* Using the opportunities offered by the 100th anniversary of
the Mission
* Encouraging those who were baptized as infants to be confirmed
after appropriate preparation
Goal Seven: Youth
We will seek to provide substantial
funding, leadership, resources and services to encourage, retain
and support youth within the church and to bring in youth from
our community
Goal Eight: Unity
We will seek to increase unity
among parishioners at the Mission by:
* Holding joint services, camps, lunches and other joint activities
regularly
* Providing balanced representation and views within the structure
and process of the church
